Planning a trip to Bangkok? Bangkok is a huge major city with lots of different neighborhoods so you’ll need to plan where you want to stay.
If you want to experience the rich, vibrant nightlife while living in a safe neighborhood, then you’ll want to limit your search to 3 main places:
- Sukhumvit Area
- Khao San Road
These areas offer the best nightlife, western style amenities and value for your buck.
Sukhumvit is by far the most popular area for tourists and expats in Bangkok. It’s very modern with 5 star hotels, malls, metro stations, bars, nightclubs, fast food chains and nice restaurants.
You are also within a short BTS ride to many nightlife attractions like Nana Plaza and Soi Cowboy. This area is best for first time visitors who want to avoid culture shock.
Cheap Hotels & Hostels
Here are a few hostels and hotels that I recommend in the Sukhumvit area.
I stayed in the Seek Sleep Hostel while living in Sukhumvit. It’s only around 300 baht per night and is located right next to the Phrom Phong BTS station. The lobby is really small but the rooms are clean and have curtains for extra privacy.
Silom is another popular neighborhood for expats because it’s located near the infamous Patong nightlife strip. Patong offers lots of go go bars and restaurants near the Silom road area. It’s accessible via the Chong Nonsi BTS station on the skytrain.
Cheap Hostels & Hotels in Silom
This is another really good hostel located on the corner of Silom road. It features a downstairs cafe & bar while the hostel is located on the 2nd and 3rd floors. It is around 300 baht per night and has very nice rooms with curtains for privacy.
Khao San Road
My 3rd and least favorite part of Bangkok is Khao San Road because it is full of drunk european backpackers who cause a lot of noise at night. If you are looking to hookup with young european tourists, then Khao San road is your best bet.
It is made up of a long street that features bars & nightclubs exclusively for backpackers.
Cheap Places to Stay in Khao San Road
This hostel is located just 200 yards away from Khao San Road and sits right next to the police station for extra safety. It offers clean dorm rooms and curtains for extra privacy. It costs just 200 baht per night.
