Travel Blog Income Report for July 2019: $1,854.04

Welcome to the 3rd edition of my monthly travel blog income and traffic report.

I decided to start publishing this report to provide transparency and inspiration for you guys out there who want to travel around the world and earn some extra income with a side hustle or internet business.

Blogging is one of my favorite ways to make money online and you can create your own money making website for just $2.95 with Bluehost.

This is also a great way for me to track my progress and improve this website in the future. We’ll be covering overall website traffic and income/expenses broken down by category along with my successes and failures along the way.

Traffic and Income Summary

I’m happy to record a record traffic increase for Expat Kings! I outlined my goals to publish more often and traffic has steadily grown since last month.

Website Traffic (ExpatKings.com)

Our traffic was 73,153 pageviews (according to Jetpack Stats). This was a 9% from June 2019 and 1% increase YOY from July 2018. Total visitors was 44,672. The majority of my traffic comes from Google and Facebook.

I’m excited to hit record pageviews on this site especially since I experienced a significant decrease in traffic during the first 4 months of 2019. One of the keys to being successful as a blogger is consistency even if things aren’t going well.

I published a total of 6 articles in July so I have a lot of work to do in terms of content creation. In my personal experience, more consistent publishing equals more traffic. If I want to reach the full potential of this site, I must update it more often and give you guys a reason to visit daily. This is my biggest goal for Q4 2019.

Youtube Channel (Subscribe)

I reached 1,853 subscribers in July and average around 100 subs per month. This is without adding any new content to the channel. However, I understand just how powerful a medium video is and really need to update the channel.

Also, I can attract non-readers to my brand and grow on another social media channel. I’m also thinking about featuring other people’s video on my channel as well. If you want to make some travel & lifestyle videos for my audience, then you can leave a comment below and we’ll get in touch.

Income Report – $1,854.04

July was a record month for affiliate earnings but I experienced a dip in revenue for sponsored posts. Here’s a breakdown by income source:

My Premium Membership – $15

Expat Kings Premium is still a work in progress. I’ve been spending a lot of time dealing with my other websites so I haven’t spent time growing this revenue source. However, I noticed a lot of traffic coming to the site for “single male travel” related keywords 😉

This looks like the perfect type of content to restrict for members only along with extra videos and ebooks. If you have any ideas of the direction of my premium subscription, leave a comment below.

Affiliate Marketing – $1,281.31

This is my true bread and butter income source for a while now. I earn the bulk of my earnings through dating and hotel booking affiliates. I do keyword research using Ahrefs to find low competition keywords then create affiliate content in the form of “best of” reviews. These reviews cover 5 to 10 top products in the article along with affiliate links which earn me a commission.

Some of my top affiliate programs are:

Amazon Associates – $21.74

Amazon affiliate income is pretty small but I haven’t published any reviews in a while. If I focus on this type of content, I can do really well by the end of December 2019. I have a few ideas for reviews to help you guys purchase high quality products for your vacations. If you want to move overseas, then I recommend buying a lot of stuff in advance because the quality of products outside of Europe & America leaves a lot to be desired.

Sponsored Guest Posts: $350

Guest post revenue dipped down since I only publish 2 guest posts in total. It’s hard to find the right mix of revenue and quality content because so many guest posters write low quality fluff to build backlinks.

Google Adsense: $186.35

Adsense is one of main focuses now because I don’t want to only focus on affiliate content to earn commissions. You guys have lots of travel & overseas living questions so Adsense is a low barrier way to monetize these types of articles. Optimizing Adsense for mobile was my biggest step in the right direction by changing to mobile banner ad to 300×250. You’ll see it at the top when you browse this page. I only placed a few more units around the content to perserve the user experience.

Expense Breakdown – $197

Here’s a quick breakdown of my expenses

My expenses increased with the purchase of our Expat Forums software via Vbulletin and I hired a few freelance writers to publish content on the site. I use Iwriter, HireWriters and Textbroker to outsource my content.

Net Income – $1,657.54

My goal is to reach $10,000 per month in net income by December 31st, 2019. This will require an intense focus on writing more content, increasing affiliate sales, finding the right sponsors, and finally launching my travel course.

Lessons Learned in July 2019

  • Stay committed – It’s important to stay focused and committed to your goals. Writing these monthly income reports gives me a sense of pride & energy as I progress towards my goals.
  • Consider Display Ads – A lot of bloggers shy away from display ads but these ads can be a great source of revenue depending on your industry/niche. Some niches are really hard to monetize but you still need to eat and pay your bills. Google Adsense is a great start for beginners while AdThrive and MediaVine are good alternatives if you have over 25k pageviews.

Goals for August 2019

My focus was increasing pageviews and traffic while optimizing displays ads in August. Since I posted this update in September, I really don’t have much to write here. Write consistently and publish my income reports early in the month so I have time to achieve my goals!
