Known for the beach, tropical fish and colorful flowers, Sosua is a beach resort town in Puerto Plata of Dominican Republic in Caribbean islands. It is 212 km away from the nation’s capital Santo Domingo and around 7 km from the Gregorio Luperón International Airport in San Felipe de Puerto Plata.
People visit this town to enjoy on the beach, for diving and whale watching. This town used to be the favorite destination for sex tourism during the late 1990s and 2000s after cracking it down to some extent, it still holds some of the remains in its nightlife. This town holds the beauty of diverse reef structure, calm water and diverse species of fishes along with vibrant nightlife.
The climate here is tropical with mild to warm throughout the year. January to March is favorite time for whale watching during mating season while if you want to go for scuba diving then June to September is the favorable time when water is calm and clear.
Getting in and around Sosua
Sosua town does not have an international airport but it is well connected with highways and domestic airlines. The nearest airport is located 7 km away in in San Felipe de Puerto, Gregorio Luperón International Airport.
This airport is well connected with the wide range of cities of North America. It holds regular direct flights to Miami, New York, Newark and Charlotte.
One way economy air tickets cost around 500$ to 800$. American Airlines, United Airlines and JetBlue Airways are providing flights throughout the year. To pass through immigration, you have to buy a 30-days valid tourist card from the immigration office in the airport itself at the expense of 10$. A taxi from the airport to Sosua will charge you around 25$. The currency used here is Dominican Peso. 1 US dollar is equivalent to 50 Dominican Peso.
Alternatively, you can also take a bus from the highway which is just 500m away from the airport terminal gate. There are regular bus services from Santiago and Santo Domingo to Sosua. It takes around 5 hours to reach Sosua from Santo Domingo, the capital city of Dominican Republic.
You can visit around Sosua on foot also as the town is not so big. You can also hire taxis or motoconchos (motorcycle taxis) to visit around the town. Motoconchos are easy to find and cheaper than taxis in Sosua. Just make sure that you will not be paying “tip” other than the prescribed fare. You don’t need to pay more than 40 pesos to visit around the town. You will also find may guides who will try to help you in getting hotels, escorts, gifts and lounges.
You can find decent rooms from 35 US dollars and range up to 400 US dollars beach resorts. There are a lot of hotels in Cabarete and Puerto Plata. You can also opt for villas in Sosua. Grand Laguna Beach and Kite Beach Inn are highly praised budget hotels.
If you are looking for luxurious vacation then you must go to Ocean High Residence which provides villas in around 350 US dollars. You can also find eco resorts to stay like Natura Cabana Boutique Hotel & SPA and Cabarete Maravilla Eco Lodge & Beach where they have their own organic farm and gardens.
You can find large numbers of restaurants offering a variety of dishes from all over the world but trying the local cuisines is recommended. There are endless arrays of restaurants and bar providing local beers and dishes on the beach. The nightlife is also vibrant here where you can see many pubs, bars and discos mainly catering to prostitutes and their customers.
In Sosua, you can go for site seeing around the beaches, town and museum or you can go for adventurous scuba diving and snorkeling.
Playa Sosua is the main beach which is always crowded with tourists. The beach looks colorful and lively with the vendors selling foods, drinks and souvenirs to the tourists. The beach also offers the option for snorkeling up to a reef which is about 100 meters from the shore. Equipment is available for hire on the site itself.
Another beach is Playa Alicia which is quieter than the former one. If you want to spend some quality time diving into the air of Caribbean and do not want to get disturbed by the crowd then you should definitely go for it.
For scuba diving, you can find a lot of tour agencies providing the packages for reasonable prices. Merlin Dive Centre, just located at the entrance of Playa Sosua provides beginner diving, advanced diving as well as snorkeling packages. Another adventure is 27 Waterfall which provides hiking, swimming, sliding, rafting and jumping in the waterfalls which is just 40-minute ride from Sosua main beach.
You can also go shopping around the town and beach where you can find souvenirs along with some beautiful funky Caribbean dresses, shorts and hats.
